The Great Pyramid of Giza, built circa 2600 BCE as the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu during Egypt's Fourth Dynasty, stands on the Giza Plateau as the oldest and sole surviving wonder of the ancient world. Designed by Hemiunu, Khufu's vizier, this limestone and granite monument originally rose 146.6 metres—making it the world's tallest structure for over 3,700 years—though erosion and the removal of its white Tura limestone casing have reduced it to its current height of approximately 137.5 metres. The smooth-sided pyramid encompasses a base of roughly 230 metres per side and contains approximately 2.3 million stone blocks weighing six million tonnes total. Within its core lie three chambers: an unfinished chamber cut into bedrock, the Queen's Chamber, and the King's Chamber, which houses a granite sarcophagus. Constructed over 26 years using locally quarried limestone and granite imported from Aswan, it represents an unparalleled feat of ancient Egyptian engineering and remains largely intact today.
