Designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry and inaugurated on 18 October 1997 by King Juan Carlos I, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao stands as a museum of modern and contemporary art on the banks of the Nervion River in Biscay, Spain. One of the largest museums in the country and affiliated with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, it presents permanent and visiting exhibitions of works by Spanish and international artists. The building itself became a signal moment in contemporary architecture, earning rare unanimous acclaim from critics, academics, and the public alike. Recognized in the 2010 World Architecture Survey as among the most important works completed since 1980, it fundamentally transformed its city quarter through Gehry's distinctive formal language.
