Founded in 1963 by Sir Tyrone Guthrie, Oliver Rea, and Peter Zeisler, the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis is a nonprofit center for theater performance, production, education, and professional training. Born from a desire to escape Broadway's constraints, the founders established a resident company devoted to classic plays performed in rotating repertory at the highest professional standards. The original building, designed by Ralph Rapson and featuring a 1,441-seat thrust stage by Tanya Moiseiwitsch, operated until 2006. The theater then relocated to a new facility designed by Jean Nouvel, where it continues today. The Guthrie won the Regional Theatre Tony Award in 1982, cementing its status as a major American theatrical institution.
