Villa Hammerschmidt is a neoclassical villa in Bonn, Germany, built in 1860 by architect August Dieckhoff as a stately home for a wealthy industrialist and redecorated in 1868 by Otto Penner. Located in the heart of Bonn's former government quarter along the Rhine, it served as the primary official residence and seat of the president of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1950 until 1994, when President Richard von Weizsäcker relocated the presidential seat to Berlin's Bellevue Palace. Known colloquially as the "White House of Bonn," the villa became a political symbol of West Germany during the Cold War. The building's ground floor comprises state rooms for ceremonial functions, while the upper floor contains the president's private apartment. Since 1994, it has served as the secondary official residence of the German president. The villa stands adjacent to the Palais Schaumburg, the chancellor's secondary residence, and opposite the zoological Museum Koenig, and is now recognized as an architectural heritage monument in North Rhine-Westphalia.
