Designed by Julia Morgan in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, the Hollywood Studio Club is a landmark dormitory in the heart of Hollywood that housed young women working in the motion picture industry from 1916 to 1975. Run by the YWCA, the chaperoned residence accommodated approximately 10,000 women over its 59-year history, providing housing to numerous Hollywood figures including Marilyn Monroe, Ayn Rand, Donna Reed, Kim Novak, Rita Moreno, Barbara Eden, and Sharon Tate. Morgan, the renowned California architect also responsible for Hearst Castle, rendered the building with the elegance characteristic of her Mediterranean Revival designs. After closing as a dormitory in 1975, the structure operated as a YWCA Job Corps facility until 2012 and was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, remaining under YWCA Greater Los Angeles stewardship.
