Located in New Haven's Long Wharf district, the Hotel Marcel is a nine-story brutalist structure designed by modernist architect Marcel Breuer and completed in 1970. Originally built as the Armstrong Rubber Company's office headquarters, the building's bold composition features a two-story base separated from a five-story upper section by a dramatic two-story air gap supported by three massive piers. Its facade of Mo-Sai concrete displays recessed windows and an eastern entrance. The structural system combines steel and concrete, with upper floors suspended from trusses. After Pirelli acquired Armstrong Rubber in 1988, the building sat largely vacant for two decades until architect and developer Bruce Redman Becker purchased it in 2020 and converted it into a hotel, which opened in May 2022. The modern conversion incorporates solar panels to achieve zero-energy operation. The building is listed on both the Connecticut Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places.
