Built around 1895 in Somerville, Massachusetts, the house at 42 Vinal Avenue is a well-preserved example of Shingle style residential architecture. The 2½-story wood-frame structure features a roughly square footprint with a cross-gable roof, its front-facing gable extending downward to shelter a porch on the building's right side. Nearly the entire exterior is clad in shingles with minimal trim detailing, making it a particularly pure execution of the Shingle style. Constructed during the period when Prospect Hill was a fashionable residential neighborhood offering convenient streetcar access to Boston for commuters, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
