The House at 9 Linden Street in Brookline, Massachusetts exemplifies the transitional architectural moment of the 1840s, blending Greek Revival and Italianate elements in a locally uncommon manner. Built in 1843 as a 2½-story wood-frame residence for Isaac Rich—a merchant and co-founder of Boston University—the house stands as one of the few surviving structures from the original development of the Linden Street area. Its mansard roof, characteristic of Second Empire style, was added later, likely during the 1860s. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, the house documents both the residential character of mid-nineteenth-century Brookline and the domestic presence of one of Boston's notable philanthropists.
