The House at 42 Hopkins Street in Wakefield, Massachusetts is an early and exceptionally well-preserved example of Italianate residential architecture. Built around 1850, the two-and-a-half-story wood-frame structure exemplifies the transition in construction methods, employing balloon framing rather than the earlier mortise-and-tenon technique. The facade is characterized by Italianate hallmarks including three bays, wide eaves with double brackets, corner pilasters, and a substantial granite foundation. A Colonial Revival portico sheltering the front entry was added around the turn of the twentieth century, introducing a later stylistic layer. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
