David S. Ingalls Rink, a hockey arena in New Haven, Connecticut, was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen and completed in 1958 for Yale University. Built between 1953 and 1958 at a cost of $1.5 million—double its original estimate—the building is instantly recognizable by its distinctive whale-like silhouette, earning it the popular nickname "The Whale." The structure seats 3,500 spectators and reaches a maximum ceiling height of 75 feet. Named after two Yale hockey captains from the Ingalls family, both primary benefactors of the arena, the rink was later recognized on the American Institute of Architects' 2007 list of America's Favorite Architecture.
