Find out more
Located on the highest point of Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands in County Galway, this lighthouse was constructed in 1818 and demolished in 1857. It was the first of several lighthouses built on the Aran Islands during the nineteenth century, though its poor positioning led to its eventual replacement by the Inisheer and Eeragh lighthouses. Its decommissioning also prompted the construction of a lighthouse on nearby Straw Island. The structure is recorded in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage.
