Opened in 1984 in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, the Iwaki City Coal & Fossil Museum—nicknamed Horuru—documents the region's rich paleontological and mining heritage through displays of local fossil discoveries and the history of the Jōban coalfield, which was once the largest on Honshū. The museum's collection includes the plesiosaur Futabasaurus suzukii, a significant find that underscores the area's importance to paleontology. Designed by the architectural firm Nikken Sekkei, the museum serves as both a natural history and industrial heritage institution.
