Completed in 1996 by the architectural firm Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum, the Jewelry Trade Center is a 59-story mixed-use skyscraper rising 220.7 metres on Silom Road, Bangkok's gemstone district. Upon completion, it became Thailand's tallest building, a distinction it has since relinquished to rank eighth nationally. The center functions as the largest jewelry trading hub in Bangkok and among Asia's largest, housing a gem-testing laboratory and gemological school operated by the Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences, alongside retail suppliers of loose gemstones and jewelry from around the world. The building's lower plaza contains the Bangkok Fashion Mall, an expansive outlet retail space, while upper floors accommodate residential condominiums, banks, a health club, food court, and various service offices. Built on 4.5 acres, the project was developed through a partnership including Henry Ho of Bijoux Holdings, Central Group leadership, broadcast entrepreneur Vichai Maleenont, and Bangkok Bank's Chatri Sophonpanich.
