Karlsburg Castle in the Durlach district of Karlsruhe has shaped Baden's history since 1563, when Margrave Charles II transformed the medieval fortress into a residential palace. After French troops destroyed the castle during their occupation of the city in 1689, Margrave Frederick Magnus began reconstruction in 1698, completing two wings by 1703 before the project stalled due to financial constraints and local resistance. His son, Charles III William, abandoned the site in 1715 to found the new city of Karlsruhe centered on a purpose-built palace; his wife remained in Durlach until her death in 1743. Today only the Prinzessinnenbau (Princesses' wing) survives from the original structure. Following decades of use as an administrative center and barracks, the castle has housed the Pfinzgau Museum since 1924. Extensively renovated between 1973 and 1988, it now accommodates multiple civic and cultural functions, including a registry office, museums, educational facilities, and the historic banquet hall.
