Karmravank, or the Red Monastery, is a ruined 10th-century Armenian monastery founded by King Gagik I of the Artsruni dynasty in the Vaspurakan province of historic Armenia, now located in Van Province, Turkey, some 12 kilometers west-northwest of Akdamar Island. Built in the Armenian architectural tradition, the monastery ceased functioning following the Armenian genocide that began in 1915. Today only the Holy Cross church remains of the complex.
