Lahneck Castle, a 13th-century fortress in Oberlahnstein above the confluence of the Lahn and Rhine rivers in Rhineland-Palatinate, exemplifies the symmetrical, oblong rectangular plans typical of Hohenstaufen-era castles. Built in 1226 and sited on a steep rocky outcrop opposite Stolzenfels Castle, south of Koblenz, the castle is distinguished by its rare pentagonal bergfried tower. Now a museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the castle gained considerable notoriety in 19th-century Britain following the death of seventeen-year-old Idilia Dubb in 1851, who became trapped in the abandoned tower after its wooden stairs collapsed; her body was discovered years later in 1860, along with her diary documenting her final days.
