Stahleck Castle is a 12th-century fortified stronghold perched on a crag some 160 metres above the Rhine's left bank at Bacharach in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, roughly 50 kilometres south of Koblenz. Built on the orders of the Archbishop of Cologne, its name—derived from Middle High German words meaning "impregnable castle on a crag"—reflects its commanding position overlooking the Lorelei valley. The castle features a water-filled partial moat, a rarity among German fortifications. Destroyed in the late 17th century, it was reconstructed in the 20th century and today functions as a hostel, remaining a protected cultural monument of Rhineland-Palatinate.
