The Leopoldstädter Theater was an opera house established in 1781 in Vienna's Leopoldstadt district by Karl von Marinelli, emerging from Joseph II's 1776 decree that ended the court's monopoly on theatrical entertainment. In its early decades, the theatre specialized in Singspiele and Possen mit Gesang (comic musical pieces), with notable contributions from Kapellmeister Wenzel Müller and his assistant Ferdinand Kauer. The dramatist Ferdinand Raimund was associated with the house during the 1820s. The theatre also managed the Thaliatheater, a summer stage. The building was demolished in 1847 and replaced by the Carltheater.
