The Maltese Church (Church of Saint John the Baptist) is a Gothic Roman Catholic church in Vienna's Innere Stadt, located on Kärntner Straße and belonging to the Knights Hospitaller. A commandry for crusaders stood on the site from 1217, but the current structure dates to the mid-15th century. The building underwent Baroque-era renovation and further modifications in 1806, when an ornate Empire marble pulpit with a Maltese cross motif was installed. Stained glass was added to the Kommendenhaus and portions of the church during the 19th century. In the 17th century it served as a favoured preaching location for Abraham a Sancta Clara. After financial difficulties following World War I, the Order sold the church in 1933; it was repurchased in 1960 and underwent staged restorations between 1968 and 1998. The church's high altarpiece was painted by Johann Georg Schmidt in 1730.
