Located in Sioux City, Iowa, the Mary Elizabeth Day Nursery is a two-story brick Renaissance Revival building completed in 1926 by architect Jurgen A. Raven and constructed by The Lytle Company. Originally established as the Sioux City Day Nursery in 1914 by the Wall Street Mission, a Methodist Episcopal Church settlement house, it relocated to this purpose-built structure—the first building in Iowa designed specifically as a day nursery and the state's oldest child day care facility. The complex expanded in 1940 with a garage and playhouse designed by local architect Knute E. Westerlind. Funding came from parents' contributions and support from religious institutions and private benefactors, later supplemented by federal and state programs during the Great Depression. Renamed the Mary Elizabeth Day Care Center in 1990, the building and its outbuildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
