Built in 1893 in What Cheer, Iowa, the Masonic Opera House is a Romanesque Revival structure that has served multiple civic functions across more than a century. The 100-by-50-foot building originally housed a Masonic hall on its third floor, whose symbolic emblems remain visible on the decorative pediment crowning the façade. The main auditorium, seating 350 on the ground floor and 240 in the balcony with dedicated second-floor amenities for balcony patrons, has accommodated opera performances, public gatherings, and cinema screenings. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, the opera house stands as a testament to the architectural ambitions and social infrastructure of a nineteenth-century Iowa community.
