The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia stands in Ravenna, Italy, a Late Antique Roman structure built between 425 and 450 that exemplifies Early Christian and Byzantine architectural traditions. Despite its name, the empress Galla Placidia—who died in 450—was never interred here; a thirteenth-century misconception led to this misnomer, when in fact she was buried in Rome, likely beside her brother Honorius in the Mausoleum of Honorius at Old Saint Peter's Basilica. The building was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 as part of Ravenna's extraordinary collection of eight structures, and remains a significant Italian national heritage monument.
