The Mihrimah Sultan Mosque stands near Istanbul's Byzantine land walls in the Edirnekapı neighborhood, a prominent 16th-century landmark sited atop the Sixth Hill at one of the city's highest points. Commissioned by Mihrimah Sultan, daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent and Hürrem Sultan, and designed by the chief imperial architect Mimar Sinan, the mosque was completed in 1562. Built in granite and exemplifying Ottoman architectural tradition, it served as both a congregational mosque and the centerpiece of a larger külliye complex, commanding views across the historic city from its elevated position.
