The Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle is a nonprofit institution dedicated to contemporary popular culture, founded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 2000 under the original name Experience Music Project. Designed by architect Frank Gehry and completed in 2004, the museum has organized dozens of exhibitions, seventeen of which have toured across the United States and internationally. Beyond its galleries, MOPOP hosts public programs including "Sound Off!", an annual battle-of-the-bands for visitors under twenty-one, and the "Pop Conference," which gathers academics, critics, and musicians. In collaboration with the Seattle International Film Festival, the museum presents the Science Fiction and Fantasy Short Film Festival each winter, and since 2007 has celebrated recording artists through the Founders Award.
