The National Theatre of Panama, located in the old city next to the church of San Francisco and Plaza Bolívar, is an opera house completed in 1908 and designated a national monument. Designed by Italian architect Genaro Ruggieri in the style of Italian operetta theater, the building was ordered into construction by Act 52 of 1904 and opened on October 1, 1908. The theatre forms one wing of a cross-shaped structure that also houses the National Palace; its interior features ceiling frescoes executed by renowned Panamanian artist Robert Lewis.
