The NBC Tower is a 37-story office building completed in 1989 on Chicago's Near North Side at 454 North Columbus Drive in the Magnificent Mile area. Designed by Adrian D. Smith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the 627-foot structure exemplifies Art Deco postmodern architecture, deliberately echoing 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York and the nearby Tribune Tower through its use of limestone piers, recessed tinted glass, granite spandrels, and flying buttresses. A 130-foot broadcast tower and spire crown the building. The tower houses NBC's Chicago offices, studios, and the owned-and-operated station WMAQ-TV, which broadcast its first newscast from the building on October 1, 1989. The building also accommodates Telemundo O&O WSNS-TV and contains 850,000 square feet of space including a connected four-story broadcasting facility where newscasts and numerous television programs have been produced.
