The Newman Centre occupies a Romanesque Revival and Queen Anne–style house built in 1891 on the University of Toronto's St. George campus, at the corner of Hoskin Avenue and St. George Street. Originally the residence of Wilmot Deloui Matthews, the building now serves as the Roman Catholic university chaplaincy for the university, operating under the direction of the Archdiocese of Toronto and in association with the neighbouring St. John Henry Newman Catholic Church. Designated a heritage property under Ontario's Part IV heritage framework and protected by an Ontario Heritage Trust easement, the house stands across from Robarts Library.
