Located at 57 East Main Street in Norwalk, Ohio, the Norwalk Theatre is a textbook example of pre-World War II Art Deco and Streamline Moderne design, completed in 1941 by renowned theatre architect John Eberson. Built for Schine Chain Theatres, Inc., the theatre features a distinctive porcelain enamel and brick facade crowned by Ohio's largest marquee, illuminated with both neon and incandescent bulbs operated by a mechanical chaser motor. When it opened to the public on August 13, 1941, the theatre boasted 1,111 seats across its main floor and balcony, state-of-the-art air conditioning, and amenities including special headphones for patrons with hearing loss. The auditorium showcases large Art Deco murals depicting a goddess with wildlife, painted by Edoardo G. Battisti of Battisti Studios in New York. Though later modifications added an expanded stage and orchestra pit housing a theatre organ that can be lifted to performance height, the interior and exterior Art Deco fixtures remain largely intact. The theatre was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2022.
