Standing beside Ballenstedt's town hall in Saxony-Anhalt, the Oberhof began as a fortified town castle built in the 16th century by the lords of Stammern, who held it as an enfeoffed property. The Late Gothic structure comprises three wings, with original groin vaults preserved on the ground floor; a connecting wing between the west and east sections was added during the 19th century. In 1869, Armgard of Alvensleben purchased the property and developed its grounds across 15,000 square meters before bequeathing it to the Alvensleben Family Foundation in 1920. Since 1948, the building has served as a children's day care centre. Designated a Kulturdenkmal, the Oberhof has returned to ownership by the von Alvensleben family and remains an important example of regional secular architecture spanning four centuries.
