Completed in 1928 at the intersection of 18 de Julio Avenue and Plaza Independencia in Montevideo's Centro neighbourhood, the Palacio Salvo is an eclectic 27-story skyscraper designed by Italian-born architect Mario Palanti. Rising 105 metres, it was briefly the tallest building in Latin America and, upon completion, the world's tallest reinforced concrete structure. Built by the business brothers Ángel, José, and Lorenzo Salvo, it reflects Palanti's architectural vocabulary—he employed a similar design for his Palacio Barolo in Buenos Aires. The building was designated a National Historical Monument of Uruguay in 1996.
