The People's Palace in Damascus, the official residence of Syria's president, sits prominently on Mount Mezzeh in the western part of the city, overlooking Damascus from its elevated position next to Mount Qasioun. Designed by architects Wojciech Zabłocki and Kenzō Tange and completed in 1985, the sprawling structuralist palace encompasses 31,500 square metres across its main building, with the entire Mount Mezzeh plateau incorporated into a fortified compound ringed by security walls and watchtowers. The palace interior is largely defined by expansive empty rooms finished in Carrara marble, while a large fountain marks the approach to the façade, creating an imposing and deliberately formal architectural statement.
