The Pioneer Oil Company Filling Station in Grinnell, Iowa, is a modern-style structure with a layered history spanning the twentieth century. Originally constructed in the 1920s as part of a local farmers' cooperative that sold gasoline among other services, the building underwent significant expansion and redesign in 1931 to accommodate its growing fuel business. It achieved its present appearance in 1937 with the addition of service bays and decorative brick veneer. Though it retained the Pioneer Oil name throughout its operational life, the station became affiliated with Mobilgas in 1936—a relationship that lasted until 1962. During World War II, it served as a tire inspection center under the wartime rationing program. After ceasing operations around 2004, the building was repurposed to house an automotive detailing business and a café. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
