Built in 1939 in Havre, Montana, the Heltne Oil Company exemplifies Moderne architecture during a pivotal moment in American gas station design. Constructed by the Northwest Refining Company of Cut Bank and leased by Danfield Heltne—whose family maintained the business through the mid-twentieth century—the building bridges the ornamental aesthetic of the early 1930s and the austere, prefabricated structures that would dominate the postwar era. Its two-toned decorative brickwork and ornamental pilasters integrate gracefully with the structure's functional modernism, while generous display windows and expansive service bays reflect the evolving demands of the automotive service industry. Positioned along the vital US Route 2 corridor, the building earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 for its architectural significance and its role in the region's automobile culture during the late Depression and wartime years.
