Built in the early 1st century AD to serve the Roman colony of Arausio in what is now Orange, Vaucluse, this ancient Roman theatre stands 37 metres high and ranks among the best-preserved examples of its type. Owned by the municipality, it originally hosted mime, pantomime, poetry readings, and farces performed free to the public, with elaborate stage machinery and sets providing spectacle for audiences who spent large portions of their leisure time within its walls. Roman authorities valued the theatre both as a vehicle for spreading Roman culture and as a distraction from political engagement. The structure has been restored to active use, principally hosting the Chorégies d'Orange summer opera festival while serving as a major tourist attraction. UNESCO recognized its outstanding preservation and architecture by inscribing it on the World Heritage List in 1981.
