The Romanian National Opera in Timișoara, one of Romania's four national opera companies, occupies a historic building designed by the prominent architectural firm Fellner & Helmer and completed in 1875. The institution itself was formally established by royal decree in 1946 under King Michael I, with Aca de Barbu as its first director. Today the opera shares its home with three other theatres—the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre, the Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre, and the German State Theatre—reflecting Timișoara's multicultural heritage. Now designated a Historic Monument, the building stands as both an architectural landmark and a center for opera and ballet performance under the oversight of Romania's Ministry of Culture.
