The Schottenstift, formally the Benedictine Abbey of Our Dear Lady of the Scots, is a Catholic monastery in Vienna's Innere Stadt founded in 1155 when Duke Henry II of Austria established a community of Irish monks in the city. Rather than arriving directly from Ireland, these monks were brought from the Scots Monastery in Regensburg, Germany. The monastery's baroque architecture dates from the 1160s onward. Since 1625, the abbey has belonged to the Austrian Congregation, which joined the Benedictine Confederation in 1893. Today the complex functions as both an active monastery and an art museum, and holds protected status as a listed heritage site in Austria.
