Built in 1276 when King Ottokar II of Bohemia laid its foundation stone, the Minoritenkirche stands in Vienna's First District as a French Gothic church originally dedicated to the Friars Minor Conventual. The site had been granted to followers of Francis of Assisi in 1224. Duke Albrecht II advanced construction, notably financing the main portal, while the Gothic Ludwig choir—erected between 1316 and 1328—served as a 14th- and 15th-century mausoleum before the church's completion in 1350. The belltower sustained damage during both Austro-Turkish wars and was ultimately topped with a flat roof. In the 18th century, Joseph II transferred the church to the Italian Congregation, who renamed it Maria Schnee (Mary of the Snows) after their relocated nearby chapel. Following disputes with the Archdiocese of Vienna, the Italian community vacated it. In 2021, the Italian Congregation donated the building to the Society of Saint Pius X, which operates it currently.
