Perched 108 metres above sea level on a Dorset clifftop, St Aldhelm's Chapel is a Norman stone structure of enigmatic purpose, built around 1150. Its square form—with corners oriented toward the cardinal points—and unusual interior arrangement of a central column supporting rib vaults distinguish it from typical chapel design. Though traditionally identified as a chapel on the basis of 13th-century chaplain records during Henry III's reign, the absence of an altar or piscina suggests it may originally have served as a watchtower protecting Corfe Castle's southern sea approaches. Set within a low circular earthwork possibly indicating an earlier Christian enclosure, the building features a Norman round-arched doorway and contemporary small window. The interior space, roughly 7.7 metres square, is divided by heavy stop-chamfered ribs leading to transverse arches. A stone cross crowns the roof, added in 1873. The Grade I listed building's archaeological surroundings—including a 13th-century grave marked by a Purbeck stone slab carved with a Celtic-style cross, uncovered nearby in 1957—attest to the site's long sacred significance.
