St. Volodymyr's Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral stands on Bathurst Street just west of Kensington Market in Toronto, Ontario. Completed in 1948 after construction began in 1946, the cathedral exemplifies Byzantine Revival architecture in the standard style characteristic of Ukraine. The building emerged from the growing Orthodox presence among Ukrainian immigrants to Canada; while early Ukrainian arrivals were predominantly Eastern Catholic, subsequent waves brought more adherents of the Orthodox faith. The first Ukrainian Orthodox Union in Toronto was established in 1926, and after meeting for years in rented spaces and borrowed churches, the community purchased the Bathurst Street site in 1935 and began realizing their cathedral.
