Stanford Memorial Auditorium (informally MemAud), completed in 1937, was designed by Arthur Brown, Jr. in conjunction with Bakewell and Weihe to honor Stanford University students and faculty lost in World War I. Built primarily through student contributions, the Mediterranean Revival structure showcases a grand central arched entry, lateral arched openings, covered side colonnades, and a red tile roof characteristic of Stanford's campus architecture. Beyond its main 1,700-seat auditorium, the building houses the drama department, Pigott Theater (200 seats), and Prosser Studio Theater (60 seats). As Stanford's largest indoor performance venue, it has hosted major speeches including Martin Luther King Jr.'s "The Other America" (1967), visits by Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev (1990) and the Dalai Lama (2005, 2010), and serves as the site for academic conferences, performances, and student activities. The facade underwent modifications in 1997 by Sebastian and Associates, which added new entry stairs, a terrace, and an accessibility ramp.
