Hoover Tower is a 285-foot Mediterranean Revival structure on the campus of Stanford University in Stanford, California, designed by architect Arthur Brown Jr. and completed in 1941 to mark the university's 50th anniversary. Inspired by the tower at Salamanca's New Cathedral, it houses the Hoover Institution Library and Archives—a collection of early 20th-century historical materials amassed by Herbert Hoover before his presidency and donated to his alma mater to form a "library of war, revolution and peace"—along with the Hoover Institution research center and think tank. The tower's first nine floors contain library stacks, with offices occupying the next three levels; notably, exiled writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn resided on the 11th floor after an invitation from Stanford before relocating in 1976. An observation deck at 250 feet offers expansive views across the campus and surrounding region, extending to San Francisco on clear days. The tower draws approximately 200 daily visitors and remains open to the public for a nominal fee, though its history includes two dramatic lightning strikes—in 1970 and August 2020—that dislodged ornamental elements from its peak.
