Stannard Rock Light, built in 1883 on a reef 24 miles off the Marquette County coast, stands as the most distant lighthouse from shore in the United States and was designed by engineers Orlando Metcalfe Poe and Godfrey Weitzel. Rising 30 meters on an exposed crib foundation rated among the top ten engineering feats in America, the tower guarded what was Lake Superior's most serious navigational hazard. Originally one of the Coast Guard's all-male "stag stations"—earning it the nickname "The Loneliest Place in the World"—the lighthouse was automated in 1962 and remains active today, though closed to public access. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
