Located in Steamboat Rock, Iowa, this modern school building documents the growth and transformation of rural American education in the twentieth century. Built primarily in 1928 following the consolidation of surrounding school districts that began in 1919, the structure expanded with the addition of a gymnasium, music room, and shop building in 1956 to serve the post–World War II baby boom. As rural populations declined toward century's end, the school was consolidated with neighboring districts in 1997, leaving the building vacant until the city acquired it in 1999. Now repurposed to house retail businesses and offices, the building was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004 for its architectural and historical significance.
