Built in 1953 on the campus of Central High School in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Storey Gymnasium is a modern brick structure designed by local architect Frederic Hutchinson Porter. The two-story building, measuring approximately 240 by 180 feet, was constructed by contractor Loren Hancock at a cost of $646,611.66 and named after William Storey, a member of the school Board of Trustees. Beyond its primary gymnasium function—initially seating 4,500 for basketball and illuminated by glass block clerestory windows—the facility was designed to support Central High School's ROTC program with an armory, rifle range, drill halls, classrooms, shops, and music spaces. Its modernist aesthetic emphasizes plain surfaces and uninterrupted horizontal lines, with minimal ornamentation beyond horizontal brick detailing in the upper portion. When East High School opened in 1965, both institutions shared the facility. The gymnasium continues to serve sporting events, circuses, graduations, and other community gatherings. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
