The Teatro de la Maestranza is an opera house in Seville, Spain, completed in 1991 as a centerpiece cultural venue for the Seville Expo '92. Though primarily devoted to opera, the theatre also stages zarzuela and other musical performances, and serves as the main concert venue for the resident Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra. The building underwent refurbishment in 2005. The theatre gained tragic notoriety on July 16, 1992, when a suspended platform collapsed during a rehearsal of Verdi's *Otello*, killing one performer and injuring forty-one others. Its proximity to Seville's historic landmarks—the bullring, former cigarette factory, and city walls—made it a fitting location for Emilio Sagi's production commemorating Carmen's 150th anniversary premiere.
