The Teatro Gran Rex is an Art Deco theatre in Buenos Aires that opened on July 8, 1937, as Argentina's largest cinema. Designed by architect Alberto Prebisch—who also oversaw construction of the city's iconic Obelisk—and completed in just seven months with engineer Adolfo Moret, the theatre sits prominently at 857 Corrientes Avenue near the city center. Its interior design drew inspiration from New York's Radio City Music Hall, and the opening was celebrated as a triumph of modern architecture, earning praise from influential intellectual Victoria Ocampo in her literary journal *Sur*. Today the theatre seats 3,300 and stands alongside the Teatro Opera as one of Buenos Aires's premier venues for international performances. The live musical adaptation of *Chiquititas*, which ran for six seasons from 1996 to 2001, became the theatre's highest-grossing event, with the 1998 season alone drawing a record 240,000 attendees.
