Teatro La Fenice is a historic opera house in Venice, Italy, designed by architects Gian Antonio Selva, Tommaso Meduna, and Giovanni Battista Meduna and completed in 1792. Its name, meaning "The Phoenix Theatre," reflects its remarkable resilience: after Venice's leading theatre burned in 1774, La Fenice rose to become one of the most renowned landmarks in Italian theatre history and a crucial site for operatic premieres. During the 19th century, it hosted landmark performances of works by the great bel canto composers—Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi—conducted by the world's greatest maestros from Toscanini to Karajan. The theatre endured two further fires: one in 1836, rebuilt within a year, and a devastating arson fire in 1996 that destroyed the interior while leaving the exterior walls intact. After a comprehensive reconstruction, La Fenice reopened in November 2004, reestablishing itself as a vital center of operatic culture.
