The Blackstone Hotel, a 290-foot, 21-story structure in Beaux-Arts and Second Empire style, rises at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Balbo Drive in Chicago's Loop. Designed by the architectural firm Marshall and Fox and completed in 1910, the hotel became celebrated as the "Hotel of Presidents" for hosting numerous U.S. presidents and celebrity guests throughout much of the twentieth century. The building gained further cultural significance by contributing the phrase "smoke-filled room" to American political vocabulary. Now recognized as both a Chicago Landmark and a place on the National Register of Historic Places, it remains a distinguished presence within the Michigan Boulevard Historic District.
