Built in 1788 by local architect Mathurin Crucy in a newly developed district of Nantes, Théâtre Graslin is an Italian-style opera house named after Jean-Louis Graslin, the original landowner. Constructed of granite and limestone, the theatre features an auditorium seating 823 people and was inaugurated on 23 March 1788, quickly establishing itself as a major cultural venue for the city. Destroyed by fire in 1796, it was reconstructed in time for Emperor Napoleon's 1811 visit to Nantes. Following a comprehensive restoration in 2003, the theatre remains an active performance space and now operates jointly with the Grand Théâtre d'Angers as part of the Angers-Nantes opera company. The building is designated as an inscribed historical monument.
