The Theatre Royal Haymarket, a Grade I listed West End playhouse in the City of Westminster, is the third-oldest London theatre still in operation, with roots extending back to 1720. The original building stood further north on Haymarket until 1821, when architect John Nash redesigned it in the Georgian style at its present location. Samuel Foote's acquisition of the lease in 1747 and subsequent royal patent in 1766 established the theatre's role in legitimate drama during the summer season. The venue holds historical significance as the site of the first scheduled theatrical matinée performance in 1873, a practice that would become standard across theatres worldwide. With a seating capacity of 888, the theatre remains under the ownership of the Crown Estate.
